Safety Starts With Me: Empowering women to take safety into their own hands.
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2022
5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
We never think a crime will happen to us, until it actually does. While unfortunate things do happen unexpectedly, it is important to be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for personal safety and crime prevention. Having a personal safety strategy in place and knowing the techniques and tactics you can use to avoid becoming a potential victim can help you live smarter and be safer. Take safety into your own hands.
“Crimes of Opportunity” are crimes committed without planning or forethought. When criminals realize they have a chance to commit a crime, they seize the
opportunity. Don’t be an easy target. We can all pinpoint times where we’ve made ourselves an easy target – whether it was keeping our heads buried in our phones, posting personal information on social media, parking in a dimly lit area at night, or leaving our houses or cars unlocked. But there are many more, less obvious situations that make us vulnerable as well.
This FREE program is designed for adults and children 12 years and older. Donations are welcome, but they are not required. This is a 2-hour demonstration course and we will cover:
- Mental preparedness
- Social Media / Online Safety
- Physical Security
- Automobile Security
- Self-Defense and Personal Protection Options
- Domestic Abuse: Warning signs in your relationship or your loved ones, how to ask for help and resources provided by Safehome.

More information about Safehome:
Safehome is a nonprofit organization and domestic violence shelter in Overland Park.
Our core purpose is to provide a healing atmosphere where survivors of domestic violence can gain inner strength, explore options, and be empowered to live a life free of abuse. Through our shelter and other services, more than 8,000 individuals benefit-many receiving the support they need to lead healthy, independent lives. As the only domestic violence shelter in Johnson County, and the largest in the state of Kansas, Safehome strives to break the cycle of domestic violence and partner abuse for victims and their children in our community.
40 years ago, a Johnson County native named Martha Hunt offered a safe haven for a neighbor being battered by her husband. Since then, our mission has been the same-to provide safety and hope to those facing partner abuse.
